Preparatory Course for Cégep or University Auditions

We begin by evaluating your current skills and reinforcing fundamentals, while also preparing your audition repertoire.

Audition Preparation

  • Learn the required audition pieces
  • Preparation of a snare drum routine based on rudiments, if needed
  • Overview of rudiments, rhythms, and variations
  • Review of various note and rest combinations

Review of Basic Rhythms + Introduction to Advanced Styles (Jazz, Reggae, Latin, World beat, Progressive Rock, Drum & Bass, Jungle)

  • Revisit basic rhythms (Pop, Rock, Funk, etc.) and infuse more flavour and nuances by incorporating accents and ghost notes
  • Explore jazz swing, fusion, and Afro-jazz
  • Explore Latin and Brazilian styles (Afro-Cuban, Samba, Bossa Nova, Songo, etc.)

General Concepts

  • Exercises to strengthen sense of rhythm, timing and groove
  • Exercises to add emotion and nuances to playing style
  • Review of advanced rhythmic combinations (sextuplets, 32nd notes, swing feel)
  • Overview of musical structures and forms

Stick and Pedal Technique

  • Rudiments (paradiddle variations, flams, rudimental solos)
  • Exercises to develop speed, endurance, precision, and control
  • Exercises to improve sound, dynamics, accents, ghost notes, and phrasing
  • Exercises to apply rudiments to the full drum set

Creativity

  • Improvisation and jamming: enhance ability to improvise across various styles and tempos
  • Learn different techniques with which to approach improvisation

Intensive Courses

Plan for 3 to 12 months of preparation with weekly lessons of 1 hour or 90 minutes. Additionally, 5 to 15 hours of personal practice per week are recommended, depending on your level.

Theory and ear-training courses are also available.

Pricing

Various formats and pricing options are available. Lessons can be taken weekly, bi-weekly, or as needed. Duration: 1 hour, 90 minutes or 2 hours.
